I am 17 and got a Ticket. Will my License be Suspended?
If you are a driver who is 16 or 17 years old, the DMV has different rules that govern whether or not you get suspended for tickets. In general, the best rule of thumb is that for a first ticket the DMV will not suspend you, but the court might depending upon the actual nature of the charge. However, if you have a previous ticket already on your record, and you get another ticket while you are still under 18 years old, the DMV will suspend you if you are found guilty of that second ticket.
This is why it is critically important if you are an underage driver–or if you are the parent of one–to talk with an attorney. Even on the first ticket, we can see about getting it dismissed so it doesn’t go on the record as a conviction. If the underage driver already has one conviction on the record and you are still under 18, then definitely you need to talk with me so we can see about trying to get that second ticket dismissed somehow to keep the license from being suspended.
The other special rule for underage drivers is that you cannot go to an online driving school, but that doesn’t come in to play quite as much as the two tickets and you’re suspended rule. That is the one that can really get people in trouble and that is the reason you definitely need to talk with me if you are an underage driver and you have a ticket in Virginia.
