Here is the WORST defense to a reckless driving charge that I’ve ever seen at the Stafford traffic court:

“I thought the speed limit was 70, and I had my speed control set on 83.”

WRONG. Don’t say it. Please!

This particular defendant was charged with going 90 mph in a 65 mph zone. In her mind, she was arguing that she wasn’t guilty of the offense as charged. But she flat out confessed to reckless driving by speed.

In Virginia, reckless driving by speed is ANY speed over 85 mph. Period. And don’t think that the judge didn’t notice. He certainly did. He pointed out that she had just admitted to reckless driving by speed.

If this lady had hired me, I definitely wouldn’t have used that “defense.” Surely if she had hired ANY attorney, the defense would’ve been more sound than admitting to the crime.
