Will I be Able to Travel With Shoplifting Charges?
If you’re charged with shoplifting in Virginia, you may be wondering whether or not you can travel while your case is pending. The short answer is that it depends. This is an important reason to consult an attorney. Give me a call early on so we can look at your case and answer this question for you specifically.
The more complicated answer is that in many cases of misdemeanor shoplifting in Virginia, you are free to travel wherever you would like while your case is pending. However, it does depend upon the nature of your case. If you’re charged with felony shoplifting for example, you may have restrictions on where you can and can’t go, particularly whether or not you can leave Virginia while your case is pending.
But if you’re just charged with misdemeanor shoplifting, you could also have restrictions on leaving Virginia. The most important thing to look at is whether or not you were given a summons or you were arrested. If you were just given a summons, then normally there would be no restrictions on you leaving the commonwealth while your case is pending. However, if you were arrested, the bond paperwork that you received should show you exactly whether or not you may or may not leave the commonwealth.
These are just a couple of simple examples that show the complexity of answering a relatively short question such as can you travel while your case is pending and this is why you need to give me a call if you’re facing a Virginia shoplifting charge.
