Your Driving Record Impacts LIFE Insurance
Did you know that your driving record can impact life insurance? I didn’t.
I’m in the process of getting a new life insurance policy. One of the questions was:
Has your driver’s license been suspended, or have you had a moving violation in the last 3 years?
Wow! Not only did they inquire about ANY moving violation, but also any license suspension.
I definitely see the point of inquiring about moving violations. A person who incurs multiple violations on the road could be risky in other areas of life. A couple speeding tickets surely wouldn’t render a person uninsurable, but multiple DUIs might be a real problem. And I suppose a litany of speeding tickets could raise your premiums.
But it bugs me that they ask about license suspensions. That seems a bit over the top. Licenses get suspended for all sorts of reasons that have nothing to do with driver safety. The main reason being for failure to pay fines on time. It’s quite ordinary to receive a non-moving ticket (expired inspection, for example), forget to pay the fine on time, and get your license suspended.
Most license suspensions that are related to safety are accompanied by a moving violation. Thus, you can get to the true root of the concern by just asking about violations.
The other interesting point here is that they ask about “violations” instead of “convictions.” The way I read the question, even if a ticket was dismissed due to driving school or if you were simply found not guilty, you’d still have to answer “yes”.
What’s the bottom line here? Drive safely.
