Hit and Run + DWI in Chicago
A woman in Chicago was charged Sunday, February 3, 2013 with failure to report an accident involving death and aggravated driving under the influence involving death when she allegedly left the scene of a one-vehicle accident and was picked up by police. The accident occurred when an SUV dropped 50 feet onto a road below. Police say that the driver lost control and crashed through the barrier. The impact killed two other women.
The accused was walking along the highway entrance ramp in the city around 7am when a state trooper saw her. According to police, she was freezing and intoxicated as well as seriously hurt.
Despite her injuries, presumably from the wreck, the Chicago woman told police nothing of this accident and instead allegedly claimed that she was walking home from a bar. The crash was discovered five hours later, and police suspected this woman was involved in the accident.
Though still awaiting toxicology reports for all three women, the state attorney’s office pressed charges against the alleged driver. Along with her first two charges, the woman is also charged with possession of cocaine and other traffic violations. She was released on bond and will appear in court in March.
If this incident had occurred in Virginia, the driver would be facing a felony charge of “leaving the scene of an accident,” due to the deaths of the two other people.
