85 mph Speed Limit – Only in Texas
People routinely drive 85 mph on I-95 in Virginia, but the maximum limit anywhere in Virginia is 70 mph. For much of I-95, the limit is actually just 65 mph.
A new toll road in Texas opened today with a speed limit of 85 mph. Yep. 85! That’s the highest speed limit anywhere in the U.S.
It’s a connector road between San Antonio and Austin, aimed to help alleviate congestion on I-35. As a native Texan, I can tell you that I-35 is a worse mess than I-95. That road’s a nightmare, and I didn’t even drive it around Austin much, where I can only presume it’s awful.
Will the 85 mph limit cause more accidents? I hope not, but only time will tell.
I wonder if the troopers will heavily enforce the law against impeding traffic. If the limit is 85, even a vehicle going 65 could cause a severe danger to other traffic.
Maybe we should try a higher speed limit for the HOT lanes they’re building between Stafford and Northern Virginia. Of course then everyone would just go 100 mph.
