Warrant in Debt

A warrant in debt is Virginia’s basic form that you can fill out to sue someone for a debt. The warrant requires the defendant to appear on a specified day and time in General District Court to contest the debt. If the defendant does not appear, the plaintiff can take a default judgment and begin debt collection procedures.

You can download a fillable PDF warrant in debt from the Virginia court website.

If you want to contest the debt alleged on the warrant in debt, you must appear. Debtors do have defenses to claims by creditors, and one of those defenses might apply to your case. The best way to assess if you have a viable defense is to contact a licensed Virginia attorney.

Some people refer to the warrant in debt as a “warrant of debt”.
